At the end of the Second World War, several fallen officers of the Red Army passing through Gheorgheni were buried in the center of the Main Square, and after the victory, a memorial obelisk was erected in honor of the Soviet heroes. The monument also played an important propaganda role in the eyes of the new authorities and a compliant public. In the center of the newly designed square, Szabadság Square, behind the tombstones with Cyrillic inscriptions, a large flowerbed in the shape of a five-pointed star, adorned in red colors, was displayed, capped by the obelisk-shaped memorial. The Cinema building had already been constructed, but the bandstand was still present, which had been erected before the First World War for weekend open-air concerts.
