Harvesting campaign. From the 1960s, following collectivization, until 1989, schools also participated in and took part in the autumn potato-digging or beet-harvesting campaigns. Although classes officially began in mid-September, in practice older students were sent out to work in the fields. Working students were not paid, but the school received a minimal allowance, either in produce or money. After the autumn school start, therefore, it was not the schoolbag that held the most importance, but the bucket, into which the more resourceful students would also take home the fruits of their daily labor.
